Community Engagement

Our department has engaged in community events in the Bronx and beyond.

In October 2022, we partnered with Indiana University to help medical students in Puerto Rico prepare for medical school interviews.

Residents and fellows participate in the Bronx Bus Tour which gives a bird’s eye view of the communities in which our patients live.

Presenting at Town Hall Meetings on topics affecting health equity.

Our divisions also participate in community engagement events, including:

  • Providing free skin cancer screenings for the South Bronx community (Dermatology)
  • Organizing and leading teams to fundraise for lupus – “Walk to Cure Lupus” (Rheumatology)
  • Rolling out a ‘Rollin’ Colon program to teach Bronx residents about colorectal health (Gastroenterology)
  • Community diabetes screening events for the Bronx community with real-time test results and counseling in partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Empire BlueCross BlueShield. (Endocrinology)
  • Speaking at churches and senior residences about advanced directives, what it means to be in the ICU, and post-ICU care (Critical Care Medicine)
  • Collaborating with community-based organizations serving largely LGBTQ+ immigrant Latinx communities to develop, implement, and evaluate a telemedicine-based HIV prevention/PrEP program for their clients.
