Fellowship Training Research Critical Care Medicine is active in clinical and translational research into acute injury and critical illness. All fellows are expected to develop an understanding of clinical research design and interpretation so that they can continue to stay current in the field and properly apply important new findings to their practice. This foundation is provided through the following: A multi-session course in basic clinical research design, study interpretation including concerns for bias and confounding, data interpretation and presentation, basic statistical methods and IRB submissions. These begin in the fall of each academic year. Mandatory completion of human subject protection training to develop an understanding of the ethics and concern regarding research involving critically ill patients Attendance at monthly multidisciplinary research seminars where intramural and extramural investigators present original research from different fields of critical care medicine. Participation in ongoing clinical studies and trials in the critical care division. All fellows will be exposed to current clinical research in the division and assist in recruitment and study implementation needed. Option to participate in independent mentored research projects for more practical experience with research and a opportunity to present results in national conferences and meetings Senior fellows in their second year of fellowship will have additional research training including the following: Mandatory year-long mentored research project conducted under the direct supervision and guidance of a senior faculty member Presentation of research project in the monthly research seminar Training in Clinical Looking Glass, a powerful web-based portal that allows for data abstraction from the hospital electronic medical system for research and quality improvement projects Opportunity to attend and present original research in national conferences and meetings
