Division of Endocrinology & Diabetes

The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes is a vibrant unit with over 40 full-time faculty engaged in research, education and clinical care. Research activities are focused on the study of diabetes, aging, thyroid disease and clinical care. Members of the Division of Endocrinology are extensively involved and play leadership roles in three NIH-funded research centers: the Einstein-Mount Sinai Diabetes Research Center; the Nathan Shock Aging Center; and the Center for Diabetes Translational Research. The Division provides endocrinology inpatient and outpatient care at Montefiore Medical Center and Jacobi Medical Center and maintains an outstanding endocrinology clinical fellowship and postdoctoral program.

Shivani Agarwal, M.D., M.P.H. Innovative Models of Diabetes Care Perspective JCEM , October 21, 2020
Dr. Shivani Agarwal, MD, MPH, director of the SEAD program at Montefiore’s Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism and an assistant professor of medicine at Einstein, recent manuscript in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, highlights and discusses the impact to diabetes care from the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the widespread adoption of new models of care due to lack of insurance coverage, technology integration and workforce shortages, and provides potential solutions to foster innovation and create sustainability.

Stephanie Leung, PhD, is the first-ever psychologist to the team at the Fleischer Institute for Diabetes & Metabolism. As Director of Psychology, Dr. Leung provides an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to endocrine care that helps patients manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other issues that may arise with a medical diagnosis.

Type 1 Diabetes Care for Emerging Adults
Young adults with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) face many challenges as they transition from pediatric to adult care for their disease. Patients between 18 and 25 are at high risk for complications, including the highest risk of hospitalizations and mortality. Shivani Agarwal, MD, MPH, director of the SEAD program at Montefiore’s Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism and an assistant professor of medicine at Einstein, writes about Montefiore’s unique SEAD Program (Supporting Emerging Adults with Diabetes) to support patients in a successful transition to adult care.

On September 17, 2018, Einstein-Montefiore held the Fleischer Institute for Diabetes and Metabolism Ribbon Cutting ceremony in honor of Dr. Norman Fleischer's legacy. Under the leadership of Dr. Jill Crandall, the Fleischer Institute will conduct cutting edge basic, clinical, and translational research as well as offer unique and innovative programs for the care of individuals with diabetes and metabolic disorders.

The first episode of the Medscape series on Type 2 Diabetes titled "Slowing the Clock" is now available to watch. The other episodes will follow in the coming months.

Supporting Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes  

Dr. Shivani Agarwal, Director of the Supporting Emerging Adults with Diabetes (SEAD) program and Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology), leads a group session for young adults with Type 1 Diabetes at the first annual Young Adult Diabetes Day held at the Bronx Zoo in early August. The event hosted young adults with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and their caregivers to discuss the challenges of living with diabetes, while learning about management strategies and new technologies.

Dr. Shivani Agarwal, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine (Endocrinology) received a five-year award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to address the health disparities faced by high-risk T1D population.

FleischerUS News & World Reports Ranks Diabetes and Endocrinology Division 14 in Nation
In the 2019-2020 USNWR Best Hospital Ranking, Montefiore ranked in one adult specialty with the Diabetes and Endocrinology division ranking No.14 in the nation. Six specialties, including Cancer, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, and Pulmonary Medicine, received high performance ratings - meaning they ranked in the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated in these specialties.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Gonzalez, Ph.D.Depression and Diabetes Management
Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez, Professor and Director of New York Regional Center for Diabetes Translation Research., and Claire Hoogendoorn, adjunct assistant professor at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, recently published inJournal of Diabetes and Its Complications, people with both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and depression tend to neglect their medication regimen. The study was supported by theEinstein–Mount Sinai Diabetes Research Centerand theNew York Regional Center for Diabetes Translation Research.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Walker, Ph.D. Preventing Diabetesin Men 

Dr. Elizabeth Walker, Professor, Department of Medicine (Endocrinology) launched the first NIH funded pilot study on diabetes prevention program tailored to engage men of color in low-income urban neighborhoods facing a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The results were published American Journal of Men’s Health.

Dr. Rajat Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine (Endocrinology), finds feeding mice twice a day decreases fat tissues and enhances muscle mass. The findings are published in Cell Metabolism.

Dr. Yaron Tomer, M.D.Hepatitis C Virus Can Infect Pancreatic Islet Cells
Dr. Yaron Tomer, Chair of Medicine, conducted a pilot study to examine the impact on liver and pancreatic cells in patients that have both type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C. The findings were published in Virology Journal.

Dr. Derek M. Huffman, Ph.D.A Link Between Dietary Restriction and Aging
Dr. Derek Huffman, Associate Professor, Department of Molecular Pharmacology; Co- DirectorChronobiosis and Energetics/Metabolism of Aging Core (CEAC),animal study findings show increased levels of sarcosine help maintain health metabolism and play an important role in extending lifespan. The study was published in Cells Report.

Dr. Young-Hwan Jo, Ph.D.Link Between Exercise and Appetite Loss
Dr. Young-Hwan Jo, Associate Professor, Medicine (Endocrinology), findings show intense exercise can suppress appetite. Dr. Jo examines the effects of an intense workout by looking at the impact of the appetite-suppressing proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus.

Dr. Nir Barzilai Albert Einstein College of Medicine Montefiore Health System Bronx NYUnlocking the Secrets of Longevity: 20 Years of Centenarian Research at Einstein 

On November 7, 2018, Dr Nir Barzilai, Professor, Department of Medicine (Endocrinology) the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair in Aging Research and director of Einstein’s Institute for Aging Research, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Longevity Genes Project with a half-day research symposium.
