Dr. Lawrence Brandt to Receive 2016 Harry Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teacher

Dr. Lawrence J. Brandt, Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases) and Surgery, will receive the Harry Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teacher at the upcoming Einstein graduation ceremony, Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Over the course of his career as a renowned clinician, researcher, and educator, Dr. Brandt performed the first non-operative gastric polypectomy; demonstrated that gastrointestinal bacteria produce cobamides from dietary vitamin B12 that may inhibit vitamin B12 absorption; showed that metronidazole can heal and maintain healing of perineal Crohn's disease; revealed that most cases of newly diagnosed IBD in the elderly are actually ischemic colitis misdiagnosed as ulcerative or Crohn's colitis; classified ischemic colitis and described its natural history; demonstrated the first laser-induced regression of Barrett's epithelium; developed (with U.S. patent) a cytology balloon to diagnose infectious esophagitis in AIDS patients; and used fecal transplantation to treat chronic and recurring C. difficile colitis. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals and has authored or edited more than 350 scientific publications and six books. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Distinguished Educator Award of the American Gastroenterological Association, the Distinguished Educator Award of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the William Dock M.D. Master Teacher Award of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, and the Clinical Achievement Award of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has been visiting professor at institutions throughout the United States, and has given over 500 lectures nationally and internationally. He is a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology (MACG) and an honorary member of the Argentine and Dominican Republic's Societies of Gastroenterology. He is a member of Einstein's Davidoff Society, recognizing excellence in teaching, and was named Best Teacher in the Department of Medicine by the house staff in 2007. full bio>>.

The faculty-nominated award, named for Dr. Harry Gordon, Professor of Pediatrics, Dean of the Medical School, and Founding Director of the Rose F. Kennedy Center for Research in Mental Retardation and Human Development, is presented each year to a faculty member who is an outstanding teacher and leader in clinical science education for Einstein medical students.
