Unbreak My Heart

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has awarded Bernice Morrow, Ph.D., and Bin Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., a four-year, $3.2 million grant. This grant will extend research studies of congenital heart disease in 22q11.2 chromosomal deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), caused when a small piece of chromosome 22, containing 40 genes, is missing. CRKL is one of the major genes in the deleted region that influences heart development. Dr. Morrow and colleagues previously found that Crkl-/- knockoutmice exhibit structural heart defects similar to 22q11.2DS patients. Now the team will study the disruption of MAPK signaling that results when Crkl is absent and that leads to aortic valve stenosis and outflow tract heart defects. Dr. Morrow is director of translational genetics, holds the Sidney L. and Miriam K. Olson Chair in Cardiology and is professor of genetics, of pediatrics and of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health. Dr. Zhou is professor of genetics, of pediatrics and of medicine.  (1R01HL132577-01A1)
