Many people with diabetes—especially those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged—struggle to adhere to behavioral and lifestyle changes that can help them manage their disease. In the October 3 online issue of American Psychologist, Jeffrey S. Gonzalez, Ph.D., and colleagues review the psychological barriers that hinder diabetes self-management. They recommend research aimed to better understand the emotional, social and behavioral aspects of diabetes. In addition, they contend that psychologists should play a central role in guiding patients through their diabetes care. Dr. Gonzalez is an associate professor of medicine and of epidemiology & population health.
