New York Magazine interviewed Drs. Nir Barzilai and Gil Atzmon for a cover story on exceptional aging that centers on Irving Kahn (age 105) and his siblings, all participants in Einstein’s Longevity Genes Project. Dr. Barzilai is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair in Aging Research, director of the Institute for Aging Research and professor of medicine and of genetics. Dr. Atzmon is assistant professor of medicine and of genetics. (November 7, 2011)

FACULTY EXPERTS

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute interviewed Dr. Steven Libutti about an international study suggesting that mutations that drive tumor growth multiply sequentially over that time. Dr. Libutti is associate director for clinical services of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center, vice chair and professor of surgery and professor of genetics. In addition, the New York Times interviewed Dr. Libutti in an article discussing Steve Jobs’ decision to delay surgery for his pancreatic cancer. (October 18, 2011; November 1, 2011)

The New York Times, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and ABCNews.com featured comments and advice from Dr. Shelby Harris on the subject of mothers who have trouble sleeping. Dr. Harris is assistant professor of neurology and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. (November 6 & 7, 2011)

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Dr. T. Byram Karasu about the difficulties and opportunities of being the sole survivor in your family, or an “adult orphan,” particularly during the holidays. Dr. Karasu is professor and chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and the Dorothy and Marty Silverman Chair in Psychiatry. (November 22, 2011)

Time interviewed Dr. Richard Lipton about a new study that links eating baked or broiled fish one or more times a week with a lowered risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Lipton is vice chair and professor of the Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology, the Edwin S. Lowe Chair in Neurology and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and of epidemiology & population health. The magazine also featured comments from Dr. Ariela Frieder on how depression is treated during pregnancy. ABC.com featured comments from Dr. Rahil Briggs on new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics on the risks of prescribing ADHD medication to toddlers. Dr. Briggs is assistant professor of pediatrics. Dr. Briggs' perspective also was noted in a USA Today story (via Healthday) about a new study in Pediatrics that found that children with fathers who suffer from depression were 33 to 70 percent more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems of their own. EverydayHealth.com quoted Dr. Mary Rosser on the subject of why young boys should also get the HPV vaccine. Dr. Rosser is assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology and women's health. (October 26, 2011)

Nature interviewed Dr. Robert Singer about recent advances in single-cell imaging and the enormous benefits a core facility with this technology provides to an institution’s investigators, students and postdocs. Dr. Singer is professor and co-chair of anatomy and structural biology, co-director of the Gruss Lipper Biophotonics Center and professor of neuroscience and of cell biology. (December 1, 2011)

Dermatology Times featured comments from Dr. Adam Friedman expressing the need for dermatologists to become educated about and involved in nanodermatology as it evolves into an integral component in the field. Dr. Friedman is assistant professor of medicine and of physiology & biophysics. (December 2011)

RESEARCH COVERAGE

NBC Nightly News featured research by Dr. Michael Lipton that shows that frequent "heading" in soccer may lead to brain injury and memory loss in amateur players. Dr. Lipton is associate director of the Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center and associate professor of radiology, of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and of neuroscience. (November 29, 2011) 

U.S. News & World Report (via HealthDay) interviewed Dr. Xiaobo Li about her research indicating that children with ADHD show brain irregularities and process information through different pathways than children without ADHD. Dr. Li is assistant professor of radiology, of psychiatry and behavioral science and of neuroscience. (November 28, 2011)

BBC News (UK) featured research by Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo that found that  interrupting the natural recycling process of cells, known as autophagy, stops the growth and spread of cancer. Dr. Cuervo is professor of developmental and molecular biology, of anatomy and structural biology and of medicine. (November 17, 2011)

COMMUNITY COVERAGE

The Forward has named Dr. Nir Barzilai to “The Forward 50,” the magazine’s annual list of those who have made a significant impact on the Jewish story in the past year, for his longevity research and leadership role in the centenarian consortium for the $10 million Archon Genomics X Prize competition. Dr. Barzilai is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair in Aging Research, director of the Institute for Aging Research and professor of medicine and of genetics. (November 17, 2011)

El Diario featured quotes from Dr. David Appel explaining how Montefiore Medical Center will support State Senator Gustavo Rivera's launch of a health initiative aimed at combating diabetes in the Bronx. Dr. Appel is associate professor of clinical pediatrics and of clinical family and social medicine. (October 25, 2011)

Queens Chronicle provided coverage of a Halloween Spooktacular fundraiser for Rett Syndrome where Dr. Aleksandra Djukic spoke to raise awareness about the rare childhood neurological disorder. Montefiore-Einstein has the only center in the tri-state area dedicated to Rett Syndrome. Dr. Djukic is associate professor of clinical neurology and of clinical pediatrics. (October 27, 2011)
