Student Spotlight

Continued Growth — The BODY (Bronx, Obesity, Diabetes and You) Club applied for and received a $5,000 grant from the AMA Foundation for its community garden project. The money will help the student-run group create a new community garden on grounds provided by Einstein and Weiler Hospital. The BODY Community Garden will offer the local community a place to plant and cultivate vegetables and herbs, enjoy a picnic, wander through a butterfly garden or along walking paths, or meditate and do exercises.

User Input — The D. Samuel Gottesman Library has a trial for USMLE Consult Steps 1 and 2, a test-prep resource that can be accessed by users who create accounts on campus with their Einstein e-mail addresses. The library staff is asking that those who use the site think about how it compares to other test-prep resources; how the questions in USMLE Consult reflect those on the actual USMLE test; if they consider the quality of information in USMLE Consult helpful in improving their content area deficiencies; and if they would recommend USMLE Consult to their peers or other students. Comments can be sent to library director Racheline Habousha.

Community Health — On Sunday, December 11, 2011, Einstein’s chapter of the American Medical Student Association joined forces with the medical school and Montefiore Medical Center to offer a community health fair at St. Ann’s Church on Bainbridge Avenue. Approximately 60 first- and second-year medical students, supervised by six Montefiore physicians, offered health screenings to more than 150 members of the Bronx community and provided 120 individuals with free flu vaccinations.

Global Perspectives — The Einstein Global Health Center was well represented at the recent Global Health Conference, a collaboration among the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, the Global Health Education Consortium and the Canadian Society for International Health, which took place in Montreal. The conference theme was “Advancing Health Equity in the 21st Century” and speakers from more than 20 nations made presentations about education, policy and cutting-edge research through posters, plenaries, workshops and training sessions. Those presenting included Einstein medical students who have participated in global health projects in Uganda and Ethiopia. Tiffany Yeh and Kathy Staats each presented on their experiences working with Dr. Carol Harris in Awassa, Ethiopia, while Morgen Yao-Cohen, Daniel O’Neil and Elena Bryce shared their experiences working with community health workers as part of Dr. Jerry Paccione’s project in Kisoro, Uganda.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The AMA student section at Einstein invites the Einstein community to hear a presentation from and meet the executive director of the National Resident Matching Program.
