The New York Times reports on research by David Stein, M.D., and a team of scientists that successfully used “gene editing” technology to alter people’s cells to resist HIV. The New England Journal of Medicine study suggests that by homing in on and disabling a specific gene, it may eventually be possible to treat HIV without the use of antiretroviral drugs. The research team was led by the University of Pennsylvania and included Sangamo BioSciences. Dr. Stein is associate professor of clinical medicine at Einstein and director of Adult HIV Research at Jacobi Medical Center.
