Professional Interests

Dr. Sayan Nandi received his postdoctoral training in Neuroscience from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Columbia University, where he studied the roles of fibroblast growth factors and small noncoding RNAs in brain development and function. His laboratory is currently focused on understanding the contributions of microglia, the principal CNS resident immune cells, in brain function. Iba1 is an intracellular adapter protein in microglia and macrophages, and has been used as a microglial marker for decades. The laboratory integrates several approaches - high resolution microscopy, electrophysiology, biochemistry and behavior - to interrogate the roles of Iba1 in synaptic development and brain function. Our einstein collaborators are Dr. Pablo Castillo and Dr. Nicholas Sibinga. The long-term research goal is to decipher the nature of cross-talk between immune and neuronal cells, and to understand how these communications are abrogated in mental illnesses and various CNS dysfunctions.

Our laboratory is currently funded by NIMH and NINDS grants (Follow links for "Active Grant").
