Department of Medicine faculty members Dr. Edward Burns, Dr. Robert Goodman, Dr. Felise Milan, and Dr. Joshua Nosanchuk will receive four of the distinguished faculty awards presented at Einstein's 2015 Commencement ceremony, May 28, at Avery Fisher Hall in New York.
Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching: Edward R. Burns, MD
Edward R. Burns, MDDr. Edward Burns, Professor of Medicine (Hematology) and Pathology and Executive Dean of Einstein has been selected by the Dean’s Teaching Award Selection Committee as the 2015 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award acknowledges Dr. Burns' many years of extraordinary teaching of Einstein’s physicians-in-the-making.
In his current capacity, Dr. Burns has responsibility for the support of clinical
and basic science research, the College's doctoral and post-doctoral programs,
the clinical and scientific relationships with the College's hospital affiliates,
the development of scientific discoveries into biomedical technology, and the
licensing of these technologies to pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners. He
also oversees the College's policies relating to the responsible conduct of
research and biomedical ethics. Dr. Burns was course director of the Division of Hematology for over a decade and continues to teach extensively. faculty profile
Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Basic Science Teaching: Robert L. Goodman, MD
Robert L. Goodman, MDDr. Robert Goodman, Assistant Professor (Hospital Medicine), has been selected by the Dean’s Teaching Award Selection Committee as the 2015 recipient of the Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Basic Science Teaching. This award is in acknowledgement of Dr. Goodman's many years of teaching excellence and his superb educational contributions to the success of the Epidemiology, Population Health & Evidence-based Medicine II course.
When Dr. Goodman took over the second-year "Evidence-Based Medicine" course in 2009, it consisted of four small-group sessions integrated into a sample of second-year subspecialty courses. By 2012, the course consisted of ten sessions, with a place on the transcript and the name "Epidemiology, Population Health, and Evidence-Based Medicine II" (EPHEM2). Dr. Goodman also teaches the first-year EPHEM1 course, and supervises and teaches clinical medicine and clinical epidemiology to internal medicine housestaff as well as third- and fourth-year medical students. faculty profile
Harry H. Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching: Felise B. Milan, MD
Felise B. Milan, MDDr. Felise Milan, Professor of Clinical Medicine (General Internal Medicine) Director of the Ruth L. Gottesman Clinical Skills Center, and Faculty Attending Physician of Internal Medicine at Montefiore, has been selected by the Dean’s Teaching Award Selection Committee as the 2015 recipient of the Harry H. Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching. This award is in acknowledgement of Dr. Milan's many years of teaching excellence and her superb contributions to the Clinical Skills Courses.
Dr. Milan specializes in the education of medical students, including teaching and assessing communication and interpersonal skills in a clinical setting. She has participated in research to define and develop ways of assessing medical student competency. In addition, she has made important contributions to using feedback in medical education, integrating complementary and alternative medicine into modern clinical practice, and applying behavioral and psychiatric knowledge to the practice of primary care medicine. faculty experts profile
Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Preclinical Teacher Award: Joshua D. Nosanchuk, MD
Joshua D. Nosanchuk, MDDr. Joshua Nosanchuk, Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Microbiology & Immunology and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, has been selected by Einstein students as the 2015 recipient of the Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Preclinical Teacher Award. This award is in acknowledgement of Dr. Nosanchuk's excellent contributions to the preclinical education at Einstein.
Dr. Nosanchuk was also selected to receive an Honorary Alumni award at this year's Commencement ceremony.
In his role as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Nosanchuk provides dedicated and individualized support to Einstein medical students throughout their basic science and clinical studies. His research focuses on the pathogenesis of human pathogenic fungi, especially Histoplasma capsulatum, Candida parapsilosis, and Cryptococcus neoformans. In collaboration with faculty in Physiology & Biophysics, he is exploring the therapeutic potential of nitric oxide delivered in sustained release by the nanoparticles for the treatment of diverse infectious diseases, including bacterial and fungal diseases, as well as utilization of nanoparticle therapeutics for wound healing. faculty profile
