Graduating Einstein medical students celebrate long-awaited residency match results enlarge photo
Einstein's current Internal Medicine residents will welcome 64 new interns in July 2012. enlarge photo On Friday, March 16, fourth-year medical students at Einstein joined colleagues at medical schools around the country to learn where and in what specialty they will spend their next 3-7 years of residency training.
Incoming Interns
The Montefiore Einstein Internal Medicine Residency Program had a strong and competitive match for its 64 PGY1 positions.
In an outstanding, unprecedented match, the Social Medicine Program matched its first five ranked applicants for its five positions. Incoming Social Medicine interns come from the following medical schools (listed alphabetically):

The Primary Care Program also matched competitively. The program's incoming interns come from the following medical schools (listed alphabetically):

The Department of Medicine continued its concerted effort to recruit academically outstanding under-represented minority ("URM") students, particularly African-American and Hispanic students, into its PGY1 class. Eight minority candidates will matriculate into the PGY-1 class in July 2012.
Internal Medicine Numbers Strong Nationally
U.S. medical graduates' interest in Internal Medicine as a career may have stabilized after a fall of some years ago. The percentages of graduates entering Categorical Medicine programs nationally are as follows: 19% in 2006, 18.9% in 2007, 18.5% in 2008, 18.1% in 2009, 18.2% in 2010, and 18.9% in 2011, and 18.7% in 2012.
389 Categorical Internal Medicine programs participated in the 2012 match.
Einstein Medical Students Entering Medicine at Higher Than Average Rates
Forty-three Einstein students will enter categorical Internal Medicine programs in July, exceeding the national average of 18.7%. Historically, Einstein students have entered Internal Medicine at a rate higher than the national average.
"Internal Medicine is alive and well at Montefiore Einstein. We continue to have a very high level of interest by our student body, despite sliding national trends, and our house staff program remains extremely strong, particularly in Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine. The national interest in Internal Medicine remains healthy, with a steady expansion in primary care," said Dr. Victor Schuster, Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
