January 8, 2013 - BRONX, NY - Karen Eschenbach, Research Administrator for the Department of Medicine at Montefiore, died at home this week, ending a productive and accomplished career in healthcare administration.

Ms. Eschenbach joined the Montefiore Einstein Department of Medicine as Assistant to the Senior Departmental Administrator in 2006, and assumed the position of Senior Administrator (Montefiore) in 2007. She served in that capacity until the spring of 2013, when she assumed the newly created position of lead administrator for research and grants on the Montefiore budget side of the Department.

Ms. Eschenbach held a B.A. in biology from the University of Chicago and a Masters of Healthcare Administration from Washington University, St. Louis. Additionally, she completed a Creating Healthier Communities Fellowship (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) in San Francisco.

From 1990 to 2004, Ms. Eschenbach was the Administrative Director of the Clinical Laboratories of the Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1997 to 2003, she was Director of Clinical Practice Operations of the Lehigh Valley Physician Group in Pennsylvania. From 2003 to 2005, she was the executive Director of Shasta Medical Associates, Inc., in Redding, California. In 2005 and 2006, immediately prior to joining Montefiore Einstein, she was Manager of the Physician Relations Department of Brown & Toland Independent Practice Association of San Francisco.

Ms. Eschenbach was an editorial board member for the Journal of the Society of Research Administrators, and a commitee or board member of numerous professional organizations, including the Healthcare Financial Management Association, MGMA - New York City Metro, MGMA Professional Development Committee, MGMA Publications Advisory Committee, and the University of Chicago Student Committee. She authored numerous articles, newsletters, and professional presentations. She was a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE), and a known thought leader in the field of medical practice management.
