Department of Medicine faculty members Eric Epstein, MD (Endocrinology) and Amanda Raff, MD (Nephrology) will receive awards for outstanding teaching at the May 29th commencement ceremony.
Eric Epstein, MDDr. Epstein is an attending physician on the endocrinology consult and inpatient medicine services, and runs the endocrine course for Einstein medical students. He is ECNU certified in neck ultrasound, with expertise in thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland. His research interests include thyroid cancer and nodules, as well as all aspects of general endocrinology (pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, and metabolic bone disease).
Dr. Epstein will receive the 2013 Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Teacher Award for excellence in basic science teaching. This award acknowledges his excellent contributions to the preclinical curriculum at Einstein.
Amanda Raff, MDDr. Raff's current research concerns the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, the use of cinacalcet in the prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in ESRD patients, vitamin D repletion in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, accumulation of uremic toxins in hemodialysis patients, and treatment of acidosis in CKD patients.
An Associate Professor of Medicine in the Clinician Educator track, Dr. Raff he has been the course director for the Einstein first -ear medical student renal system course since July 2007 and is the East Campus Curriculum Coordinator for the Nephrology Fellowship Program. She has been recognized for her teaching excellence at Einstein with the Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Teacher Award and membership in the Leo M. Davidoff Society.
Dr. Raff will receive the 2013 Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Basic Science Teaching. This award acknowledges her many years of teaching excellence and superb educational contributions to the success of the renal systems course.
