Professional Interests

Dr. Lauren Shapiro received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has been a part of Montefiore Einstein ever since. She trained in the Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine Residency program at Montefiore, was the Firm 3 Chief Resident, and then started as an Associate Program Director in 2010. Since that time she has held many roles, including interim Co-Program Director for PC/SIM for 2012-2013. Dr. Shapiro was the assistant director and then director for Firm 3 until 2018 when she was recruited to become the Program Director. Dr. Shapiro is a Clinician Educator whose areas of interest include resident wellness, social determinants of health, clinical reasoning, and, above all, resident education.

Dr. Shapiro is originally from southern New Jersey and obtained her undergraduate degree in biology from Rutgers. She is grateful to have found her academic home here in the Bronx. A practicing primary care doctor, Dr. Shapiro enjoys precepting in clinic, and does frequent ward rounds with house staff. She has been recognized for her teaching with the Montefiore Residency Teaching Award for 2012-2013 and induction into the Davidoff Society for outstanding achievement in the teaching of medical students in 2017. She is passionate about providing excellent medical care, especially to the most underserved and vulnerable patient populations. Dr. Shapiro is also devoted to her residents and to providing them individual attention to fulfill their potential and future professional goals. She believes that residency is a time to learn the art of medicine, and that can only be accomplished in a supportive and challenging environment surrounded by faculty and colleagues that help you along your path. Her passions beyond medicine include her three daughters, her community, tennis and running.
