Third-year resident Dr. Andrew Lipsky, Firm 2, has been chosen as this year's first place recipient of the Henry L. Moses Clinical Paper prize for his article titled "Incidence And Risk Factors Of Bleeding-Related Adverse Events In Patients With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Treated With Ibrutinib", published in the December 2015 issue of Haematologica.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Adrian Wiestner at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Dr. Lipsky's study evaluated the risk of bleeding posed by Ibrutinib, an oral inhibitor of Bruton's tyrosine kinase that is highly effective in patients with CLL. In addition to elucidating the mechanism of bleeding risk, the study concluded that patients at highest risk of clinically significant bleeding can be detected through a few simple clinical laboratory tests and counseled to avoid aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and fish oils that may further predispose them to bleeding.

Dr. Lipsky will begin the Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship at Weill Cornell next year.

Sponsored by the Montefiore Staff and Alumni Association, the Henry L. Moses Prize Competition recognizes members' exceptional contributions to healthcare. The Association honors members, including house staff, for scientific or medical excellence in any department. Dr. Lipsky's award will be presented at the 2016 Montefiore Dinner Dance and Awards Ceremony, March 19, 2016 at Glen Island Harbour Club.
