Advanced Pulmonary Failure and Lung Transplantation Program

Montefiore Einstein's Advanced Lung Disease Program provides comprehensive and interdisciplinary services, treatment and surgical options in one convenient location. It is the only provider of lung transplant surgery, interstitial lung service and advanced emphysema treatment in the Bronx community.

Together with Montefiore’s Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Department of Medicine, the Advanced Lung Disease Program at Montefiore Einstein brings together teams that include pulmonologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, radiologists, rheumatologists and other related specialists to provide groundbreaking care for patients with complex medical conditions.

Our team of nationally recognized doctors bring extensive lung transplant experience to Montefiore Einstein. Collectively, they have performed more than 1,000 transplants contributing to outcomes at our institution that are higher than the national average. In addition, our team has performed complex cardiac surgery for patients experiencing lung failure and other pulmonary issues, as well as patients who require lung surgery as part of their cancer treatment. Since the program’s inception in the fall of 2017, approximately 88 lung transplants have been performed, including dual organ transplants such as heart-lung, lung-kidney, and lung-liver as well as cardiac artery bypass surgery at the time of lung transplant. The program also brings internationally recognized excellence in “bloodless” surgery for those patients who are not candidates for blood transfusions. We are a premier center for ECMO support as a bridge to recover and/or pulmonary transplant for patients in pulmonary failure. To enhance the program’s academic presence, we actively participate in cutting-edge bench-to-bedside clinical research such as the treatment of lung failure associated with COVID by utilizing stem cells and smart molecules (e.g. leronlimab and axatilimab).

In addition to the program’s surgical and medical directors, the medical faculty is complemented by the renowned bronchology expertise of Drs. Ali Mansour and Mohammed Abbasi. Dr. Mansour is board certified in pulmonary and critical care, critical care echocardiography, interventional pulmonology, vascular medicine, and sleep medicine. Dr. Abbasi is board certified in pulmonary and critical care as well as interventional pulmonology.

Through the program’s new fellowship program in advanced lung disease and lung transplant, we are educating the next generation of transplant pulmonologists in all aspects of the management of patients with advanced pulmonary failure. Over the course of one year, this program trains physicians to become independent and competent with hands-on, supervised experience, preparing them to be lifelong learners in the field.
