Liise-anne Pirofski, MD, FIDSAMay 3, 2015 - Bronx, NY - Dr. Liise-anne Pirofski, Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Microbiology & Immunology; Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases; and Selma and Dr. Jacques Mitrani Chair in Biomedical Research, is the 2015 recipient of the American Society for Microbiology's William A. Hinton Research Training Award.
Given in memory of William A. Hinton, a physician-research scientist and one of the first African-Americans to join the ASM, this award honors outstanding contributions toward fostering the research training of underrepresented minorities in microbiology.
An accomplished physician-researcher and member of the American Academy of Microbiology and Association of American Physicians and a fellow of IDSA and the American College of Physicians, Dr. Pirofski has received the faculty-nominated Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Basic Science Teaching, as well as a Faculty Mentoring Award from Einstein. She is a member of the Einstein Leo M. Davidoff Society, which honors teachers who have made significant contributions to the education of students at the College of Medicine.
Over the course of her productive career, Dr. Pirofski has contributed extensively to institutional committees and service, including serving as a Minority Admissions Representative for the Sue Golding Graduate Division at Einstein; co-developer, organizer, and moderator of the Inaugural Career Development Day for Fellows; and facilitator of the Inaugural Career Day for Women in Science and Medicine. She has mentored numerous female and underrepresented minority post-graduate (PhD) and post-doctoral research trainees who have gone on to careers in academic medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, and public policy. Fellows mentored by Dr. Pirofski are currently working for entities including the NIH Biochemistry and Biophysics Center, Thermo Fischer Scientific, the Food and Drug Administration, Case Western Reserve University Medical School, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Pirofski has also mentored multiple pre-doctoral trainees considering careers in medical research, and served on many thesis advisory committees for minority students.
Dr. Pirofski recently delivered the keynote address at the 10th Annual American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) Meeting.
