The Montefiore Einstein Division of Hematology is pleased to announce the appointment of Patricia Shi, MD to Montefiore Medical Center.
Dr. Shi is actively involved in expanding future treatments available for people with sickle cell disease and is a leader in ongoing clinical trials for sickle cell patients. At Montefiore, a recent trial, that has safely treated 12 patients, examined intravenous gamma globulin (an FDA-approved drug for other diseases) to treat acute pain crises. The hope is that intravenous gamma globulin will help to decrease pain more quickly and allow patients to be discharged sooner. A second trial, also at Montefiore, examines a drug that mobilizes blood stem cells in patients diagnosed with sickle cell that have long-term goals of correcting the gene that causes the disease. The drug, Plerixafor, is FDA approved to mobilize blood stem cells.
In 2011, Dr. Shi was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Network for her clinical care of people with sickle cell disease and is committed to addressing and managing the multitude of effects that sickle cell disease can have on a person’s well-being.
Dr. Shi is board certified in both hematology and transfusion medicine and has over 20 years of experience in treating people with sickle cell disease. A graduate of Johns Hopkins and Duke Universities, she trained at the National Institutes of Health and was formerly Director of the Adult Sickle Cell Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. In addition to her Montefiore appointment, Dr. Shi is currently Medical Director at the New York Blood Center.
