Dr. Chinazo Cunningham Receives AMERSA Mentoring Award

Dr. Chinazo O. Cunningham received the Anderson Spickard, Jr. Excellence in Mentorship Award at the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) 29th Annual National Conference, November 5-7 in Washington, DC.

The AMERSA Excellence in Mentorship Award supports and recognizes outstanding individual achievements in the field of substance use mentoring. Recipients are nominated by their mentees for providing exceptional mentoring resulting in increased scholastic achievement and career advancement in the area of substance use education or research.

Dr. Cunningham is Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine) and Family and Social Medicine, Director of Diversity Affairs and Director of Research Resources for the Department of Medicine, Associate Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, and Director of the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program. She has spent over a decade providing care, developing programs, and conducting research focused on marginalized populations including drug users, HIV-infected individuals, and the unstably housed. While on faculty at Einstein, she has collaborated with community-based organizations to develop unique and innovative programs to deliver health care to these marginalized populations. Parallel with program development, her research has focused on improving access to care, utilization of health care services, and health outcomes. She has mentored over 20 trainees to conduct clinical research, resulting in several NIH-funded grants led by her trainees.

Dr. Cunningham's award was presented by mentees Dr. Joanna Starrels and Dr. Aaron Fox on November 6 at the conference's awards dinner.
