If you are interested in residing in Einstein postdoctoral housing, it is advisable to have your department administrator submit the necessary application to the Belfer Institute to be placed on the waiting list as soon as possible. All Einstein apartments are unfurnished and include gas, heat and hot water. The application for postdoctoral housing can be found here.
Each resident is responsible for establishing an account to pay for electricity. The housing office will provide you with the necessary information to establish an account with Con Edison, the utility company that services the Bronx. If you wish to have a land line telephone in your apartment, you must first purchase the telephone of your choice, then contact a telecommunication company that provides service, of which there are a variety from which to choose. Many postdoctoral investigators choose cellular phone service rather than the traditional home "land line".
Paying Your Rent
There are several ways to pay your rent, including a new, convenient payroll deduction option.

Direct debit from your paycheck through payroll deduction –Einstein is introducing a new rent-pay program for Fall 2023: You can choose to have your monthly rent equally deducted so that half of your rent is deducted from your paycheck on the 15th and the other half of your rent is deducted from your second check of the month. Splitting the payments can help you with budgeting your expenses each month.
To apply for payroll deduction, complete this payroll deduction authorization form. Please print and return your completed authorization form to the housing office. Your authorization will remain in effect until you cancel it. Direct any questions to the housing office (einsteinhousing@montefiore.org) or the payroll office (payroll@einsteinmed.edu).
Postdoctoral fellows who have a parking spot in the Rhinelander garage may also elect to pay their parking through tax-free payroll deductions, which will be split the same way as rent payments.
- Personal check – You can mail a check for the full amount of your rent to the housing office or drop off your payment in the gray box outside the housing office door.
- Credit card – To make rent payments using your credit card (Visa or Mastercard only), create a user name and password for access to the Credit Card Portal.
- Bill pay through your bank –Set up the housing office as a payee using your bank’s bill pay option. The bank will send checks directly to the housing office to pay your rent each month.

Every apartment is equipped with Wi-Fi at no additional cost.
Residents’ WhatsApp Group
Rhinelander residents have a WhatsApp group where you can ask questions or connect with other residents. Contact the housing office for details on how to access the group once you’re a resident.
Apartment Repairs
If you have an emergency in your apartment—gas smell, flood, fire—call the 24-hour security desk at (718) 430-2019. They will contact the building superintendent to respond. For maintenance problems, you can submit a work order online via the Work Order Portal.
Postdoc Housing & Temporary Housing Guest Policy
Postdoctoral Fellows residing in Einstein postdoctoral housing or those in Einstein temporary housing who wish to have guest should review the Postdoctoral Housing & Temporary Housing Guest Policy and complete the Postdoctoral Housing Guest Application and return the Belfer Institute (belferinstitute@einsteinmed.edu) and Einstein Housing Office (einsteinhousing@montefiore.org).

FINDING HOUSING OFF-CAMPUS
If prefer to reside in private housing in the community, it is recommended that you consult a realtor in the area. Local realtors have listings of apartments or houses in the vicinity that are available for rent. The rent for a non-Einstein apartment will be higher than that for Einstein housing and, in most cases, you will need to pay the real estate broker a fee, generally in the amount of one or two months' rent.
