Einstein Launches Community Health Lecture Series on Advances in Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatments

November 23, 2010 – (BRONX, NY) – Are there alternatives to mammography for identifying breast cancer? What recent innovations in breast cancer therapies have proven effective? What progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer?

Those questions and more will be addressed when Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University launches its Community Health Lecture Series with “Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: Where We Are, Where We’re Going.” Taking place on Einstein’s campus Tuesday, November 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. (details below), the evening will feature a series of talks with Einstein faculty. All community health lectures are free and open to the public.

The inaugural lecture will address the latest advances in diagnostics, surgery and innovative therapies for breast cancer. The evening will be hosted by Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean, and feature three cancer specialists from Einstein, Montefiore Medical Center and Jacobi Medical Center:

Miriam David, M.D., assistant professor of radiology (breast imaging) at Einstein and director of women’s imaging at Jacobi Medical Center, will discuss recent advances in breast imaging for the detection of breast cancer, including breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), breast specific gamma imaging (BSGI) and positron emission mammography (PEM).

Leslie Montgomery, M.D., chief of breast surgery in the department of surgery at Einstein and the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care, will review surgical options, including lumpectomy, mastectomy and reconstruction.

Joseph Sparano, M.D., professor of medicine (oncology) and of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health at Einstein and associate chair of oncology at Montefiore Medical Center, will describe his research conducting clinical trials and explain the various chemotherapies available and under investigation.

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session, moderated by Dr. Spiegel.
