Researchers to educate the public with Stem Cell Awareness Day

News12 interviews Eric Bouhassira, Ph.D., about his research to develop blood-forming stem cells that can differentiate into red blood cells, which could potentially help people who need transfusions. Dr. Bouhassira is professor of cell biology and of medicine and is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.

UPI features research by Mary E. Fabry, Ph.D., and Eric E. Bouhassira, Ph.D., which identifies a potential new treatment for thalassemia, a debilitating type of inherited anemia that affects millions of people worldwide. Their study in mice, published in Nature Medicine, also found that the treatment would address the iron overload that accompanies the lifelong transfusions often used to treat the disease. Dr. Fabry is professor of medicine and Dr. Bouhassira is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.

Modern Healthcare interviews Eric Bouhassira, Ph.D.,and Jeffrey Pessin, Ph.D., in a cover story on federal and state stem cell funding. The cover, entitled, Dishing it Out, appears in the March 16th edition. Dr. Bouhassira has recently been awarded a $6 million grant from the Empire State Stem Cell Board, Dr. Pessin has been awarded a $1 million grant. Dr. Bouhassira is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine and a professor of medicine and of cell biology. Dr. Pessin is director of Einstein's Diabetes Research Center and a professor of medicine and of molecular pharmacology.
