The Hill published an op-ed by Einstein's Dean, Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., and Montefiore President and CEO Steven Safyer, M.D., titled "Angelina Jolie, the Sequester, and Health in America." The authors argue that Ms. Jolie's decision to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy was made possible by two decades of research by inquisitive scientists on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, much of it supported by the NIH. They assert that the funding cuts demanded by the sequester places this type of research in jeopardy.

ABC News features comments by Dr. Allen Spiegel, The Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean, on the recent lifting of federal funding restrictions by the Obama administration on embryonic stem cell research. Dr. Spiegel was a vice chair of the NIH Stem Cell Research Task Force from 2005 to 2006 and a member of the task force from 2002-2005. In 2001, Dr. Spiegel met with President Bush to discuss the importance of human embryonic stem cell research for patients with type 1 diabetes and has testified before the House and Senate on stem cell research.
