ScienceNews interviews Gloria Ho, Ph.D., about new research indicating that overweight and obese women who lose at least 5 percent of their body weight lower the levels of inflammatory markers in the blood, which have previously been linked to cancer. The Cancer Research study, which Dr. Ho characterized as “promising,” noted that this improvement was only seen in participants assigned to the dieting and exercise group – those on the exercise-only plan did not see the improvement, despite losing several pounds in many cases. Dr. Ho is professor of epidemiology & population health at Einstein.
