The New York Times' "Well" blog interviews Mario Garcia, M.D., about a new study that shows more than one-third of patients taken to hospitals for heart attacks do not experience its hallmark symptom, sudden chest pain. The study was particularly concerning for women: 42 percent did not have the symptom and those under 55 who didn’t were 2 to 3 times more likely to die in the hospital compared with men of the same age with classic heart attack symptoms. Dr. Garcia notes that this is may be due to physician bias – doctors don’t think young women have heart attacks – and that women delay seeking treatment. Dr. Garcia is professor and chief of cardiology at Einstein and co-director of the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek (via HealthDay) interviews Mario Garcia, M.D., about a new study that shows blood pressure medication can reduce the risk of congestive heart failure, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in people without high blood pressure. Research found that the risk of stroke was reduced by 23 percent and the risk of cardiovascular mortality by 17 percent in those taking the medications as compared to those who were not. Dr. Garcia notes that findings are not unexpected since these drugs have already been shown to prevent cardiac events in patients who have previously had heart attacks or heart failure. Dr. Garcia is professor and chief of cardiology at Einstein and co-director of the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center.

The New York Daily News interviews Mario Garcia, M.D., about a new report from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene which found that the Bronx has the highest death and infant mortality rates of all the city's boroughs. The report singled out Morrisania, in the poorest Congressional district in the nation, for the alarmingly high rates of debility. Dr. Garcia notes that although it has four times the incident of heart events, it has seen an improvement in reducing the death rate in its younger population. Dr. Garcia is professor and chief of cardiology at Einstein and co-director of the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center.
