Dr. Howard Dean (Class of '78) to Address Albert Einstein College of Medicine Commencement, June 4

April 30, 2003 -- (BRONX, NY) -- Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Howard Dean received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. More recently, he served for 12 years as the governor of Vermont and is currently among the hopefuls seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2004 Presidential election. On Wednesday, June 4, 2003, Dr. Dean returns to his medical school alma mater to deliver the commencement address at its 45th annual commencement, which will take place at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, at 6:00 p.m. 

In addition to the conferral of 143 M.D. degrees, 31 Ph.D.s and 11 combined M.D.-Ph.D. degrees, the ceremony will honor the teaching excellence of seven Einstein faculty members, as follows:

  • The Leo Davidoff Society Lifetime Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence:              Dr. Richard Hays

  • Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Basic Science Teaching: Dr. Edward Burns 

  • Harry Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching: Dr. Melvin Zelefsky

  • Samuel Rosen Awards for Outstanding Teaching in the Preclinical Curriculum:               Dr. David Prezant

  • Samuel Rosen Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Clinical Curriculum:                       Dr. Gisele Wolf-Klein

  • Ladonne H. Schulman Award for Excellence in Teaching (Sue Golden Graduate Division): Dr. Zaven Kaprelian 

Dr. Dominick P. Purpura, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, will preside at the commencement ceremonies. Dr. Norman Lamm, president of Yeshiva University, will confer the degrees.
