  Summer highlights: Karina left to start a postdoc at Columbia, Paola successfully defended her thesis, Sara Maleki and Rachel Fremont joined the lab!!  ...all celebrated in the usual gluttonous KamLab style..  P.S. Sorry for the hiatus!  This website is under construction while your webmaster tries to figure out this new software and tries to convince The Big Cheese to get a professional webmaster :)
     
06/02/09   Kamran was the "Student-Invited Speaker" at this year's Graduate Reception!  The award is given annually to a faculty member elected by the student body to deliver non-scientific pearls of wisdom at the reception.  Obviously, the votes must've been rigged this time :)
     
05/26/09   Another successful annual departmental retreat.  Paola was selected to give a talk this year!
     
05/09   Deaf to our warnings, Christopher Chen joined the gang.  We extend our condolences, C.C.  But we appreciate the excuse to dine on the boss' dime, anyway. Celebrations at Pio Pio to come...!
     
05/02/09   Paola was selected to give a talk at the annual meeting of The Society for the Neural Control of Movement in Hawaii! (Your webmaster will try posting video of Dr. Calderon hula-dancing ASAP.)
     
04/28/09   Esra passed her qual! To celebrate we ate-all-we-could at an Indian restaurant in New Rochelle.  Congratulations, "Master"!  You are now officially a Ph.D. candidate! (Please note: NOT a mexican food venue this time...)
     
12/30/08   It's Joy's turn to move on :( We all bid her "good riddance" by trekking to the city during the first snowstorm of the season and enjoying a relaxing four-hour lunch at Asia de Cuba (yum!).  Joyster you will be missed.  Knock 'em dead at your new postdoc!
     
12/22/08   Johanna received a National Research Service Award (NRSA)!  The NINDS fellowship will fund her pre-doctoral training for three years.  (Your webmaster is ecstatic!)
     
11/15/08 - 11/19/08   Paola, Johanna, Karina, and Kamran presented posters at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, D.C.
     
10/02/08   Karina just won the 2008 Best Doctoral Thesis in Biological Sciences prize awarded by the Catholic University of Chile.  Congratulations on your great accomplishment, Karina!
     
08/30/08   Kamran was a featured speaker at the Integrative Brain Research Symposium at Niigata University in Japan.
     
08/08/08   Johanna was accepted into the Neuroscience Scholars Program!  The three-year fellowship, funded by NINDS through SfN, is designed to enhance career development and professional networking opportunities for students underrepresented in neuroscience.
     
07/06/08   Karina defended her thesis in Santiago, Chile on Friday, June 20!!!!!  We celebrated at Kamran's house on Sunday, July 6 with barbecue, swimming... and lots of beer and champagne!  Congratulations, Dr. Chilean sea bass!!
     
06/30/08   Caroline is leaving the Khodakhah lab and moving on.  We said our goodbyes as we lounged outside at a Mexican restaurant in the city sipping on margaritas and sangria.  We will miss her dearly and wish her the very best in all of her future endeavors.  Line, keep in touch -- i.e. check your facebook!!

05/08   Esra Tara joined the lab!  The Khodakhah lab warmly welcomed her with a delicious Mexican lunch at El Tio in New Rochelle.  We commend you on your lab choice, E.T.!!
     
05/28/08   The Neuroscience department held its retreat at Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor, NY on May 27-8, 2008.  Karina presented a seminar entitled "Reversing the role of rebound firing in the cerebellum,"  Joy, Karina, Paola, and Johanna presented posters... and Kamran won the title of "Miss Einstein."
     
05/13/08   Sung-Min passed his qual on May 13, 2008!!  We celebrated with lunch and champagne after he submitted his proposal, and more boozing and munching with the department after his defense.  Great job, Sparky!
     
11/11/07   Sung-Min presented a poster on November 11, 2007 at the annual AECOM MSTP retreat held at Mohonk Mountain House in upstate NY.
     
11/07/07   Joy and Kamran presented two posters at this year's Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, CA.
     
07/16/07   Kamran was just promoted to Full Professor ! ! !  The entire department celebrated with champagne, cake, and cheerCongratulations, Kamran -- YOU EARNED IT!
     
07/12/07   Joy successfully defended her thesis on July 12, 2007!  To celebrate, we all gorged on barbecue at a pool party at Kamran's house, and the next day we went to Six Flags Great Adventure!!  Congratulations, Dr. Walter!!!
     
06/26/07   Sung-Min Park joined the lab on June 26, 2007 amidst great controversy.  Uhh, yeah.  Welcome to the lab, Sparky!
      
06/25/07   Kamran gave a seminar at Ohio State University on June 25, 2007.  
     
06/05/07   Congrats to Kamran for winning the LaDonne Schulman Faculty Recognition Award, awarded by the graduate students of AECOM "in recognition of his contributions in science and teaching and for his constant encouragement and support of the graduate student community."  Kamran was honored both at the Graduate Reception and Graduate Ceremony on June 5-6, 2007.  We're so proud of you, Kamran!
     
05/15/07, 06/07/07   Despite multiple nervous breakdowns, your dear webmaster, Johanna, passed her Qual on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 -- AND got through her first works-in-progress (WIP) seminar on Thursday, June 7, 2007, IN ONE PIECE..... and now has time to update the website =P
     
04/18/07   Joy and Kamran gave talks at the Synapses: From Molecules to Circuits & Behavior meeting at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory held April 18-21, 2007.
     
03/30/07   We are happy to announce the arrival of Sofia Valentina Basilio, born on March 30, 2007 at 6:12 pm, weighing in at 7 lbs 8 oz.  Both Paola and Sofia are doing well. 
      
10/20/06   Congratulations to Paola and Daniel on their wedding in Bogotá, Colombia on October 20, 2006!!!  Kamran & family, Joy & Jakob, and Caroline, were surprise guests.  Find a sampling of photos here

08/11/06   Congrats again to Danny who's starting at Columbia Med this Fall. We stuffed ourselves with Italian food and sangria as we bid him farewell.  Good luck, Danny Boy!
     
08/02/06   Congratulations to Paola for passing her Qualifying Exam on Wednesday, August 2, 2006!!! Celebrations during the 101°F record heat included an ice cream cake party at the lab, followed by a pool party at Kamran's house.

06/19/06   Caroline, Danny, Karina, and Paola presented posters at this year's departmental Neuroscience retreat at the Edith Macy Conference Center on June 19-20, 2006.
     
    Kudos to Kamran for winning the most students' choice awards at the retreat for the following categories: Most Likely To Go For The Jugular, Best Unibrow and Best Couple (shared with Alberto).  Kamran and Alberto have won the Best Couple award two years in a row!
     
06/15/06   Congratulations to Joy and Kris on the birth of their first baby, Jakob Michael Nagy.  Jakob was born on June 15, 2006.
     
06/12/06   Welcome back to Dominick P. Purpura.  A luncheon open to the entire AECOM Neuroscience community was held at the Kennedy Center on Monday, June 12, 2006, honoring Dr. Purpura's return to our department following 22 years serving as Dean of AECOM.
