Professional Interests

Dr Bruce Schwartz is currently the Deputy Chairman, Clinical Director and a Professor of Psychiatry in of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Dr. Schwartz’s responsibilities include oversight of activities in the Department at the Weiler, Moses, Wakefield and Behavioral Health Clinics at Westchester Square as well as the Division of Substance Abuse and Substance Abuse Treatment Program.  Dr. Schwartz serves as Medical Director and was a founding member of University Behavioral Associates, a not for profit behavioral health management services organization. 

Dr. Schwartz has a national reputation in behavioral health service delivery.  He is currently the Treasurer of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).  He serves on numerous committees and organizations including the APA’s Committee on Reimbursement for Psychiatric Care (past-chair), Council of Healthcare Systems and Financing (past-chair), the NY Academy of Medicine’s Committee on Admission and Membership and the American Hospital Association’s Governing Council of the Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services (past-chair).  He currently chairs the Mental Health Association of NYC’s Professional Advisory Board and serves on the MHA-NYC Board of Directors.  Dr. Schwartz is the past Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy and is the Program Director of the Annual Chief Residents (“Tarrytown”) Leadership Conference.  He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the American College of Psychiatrists and is regularly selected by Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors and by New York Magazine as a Best Doctor.  Dr. Bruce Schwartz is an expert in the treatment of affective disorders and psychopharmacology.  He has been regularly selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctors and by New York Magazine as a Best Doctor.

    Bruce Schwartz, M.D., comments on the mental and emotional toll that caring for COVID-19 patients has taken on front line workers and predicts an uptick in post-traumatic stress after the pandemic subsides.
