FirstGen at Einstein hopes to first and foremost foster a vibrant First-Generation, Low-Income (FLI) community on campus. We plan host social events for FLI Einstein students, and to have 1-2 panels per year for medical students that highlight some of the FLI success stories on campus from alumni. Outside of the Einstein community, we also aim to build programming for FLI undergraduate mentees in the several FLI-oriented clubs that exist within Einstein and Montefiore. Some of our current projects include the creation of a mentee-mentor network in collaboration with the Einstein Alumni network, so that Einstein medical students can connect with FLI mentors in their field of interest. We are also working on the creation of panels and workshops for FLI undergraduate mentees within service learning, SGB clubs, and mentees within the many pipelines that exist for FLI & URM students both within Montefiore and Einstein. This is likely to include panels that highlight the intersectionality between various POC communities and the FLI community, and how this intersection can pose unique struggles. All together, FirstGen plans to build several avenues to engage with both the medical and pre-medical FLI community in the Bronx.

If FirstGen’s first goal is to unite the students at Einstein, it’s second goal is to bring that united student body closer to the large FLI pre-health community within the Bronx. It is our hope that we can not only foster a vibrant FLI community at Einstein, but that we can also bring that community toward becoming a supportive, active part of the FLI community in the Bronx.

Plant Based at Einstein seeks to spread awareness of the health, environmental, and ethical reasons behind a whole-food plant-based diet through events for Einstein students and the larger Bronx community. Medical professionals do not receive adequate education in nutrition. At the same time, the leading causes of death in the U.S. are largely preventable with appropriate dietary interventions. Our patients expect us to know the nutritional interventions that will promote their health, but we do not. Medical education has not filled this gap; most of U.S. medical schools do not have integrated nutrition education. And of those that do, only a handful emphasize a whole-food plant-based diet, which has been proven through decades of research to be a powerful tool in promoting patient health. We strive to bring this nutrition education to Einstein and the Bronx through lectures, interactive cooking challenges, movie screenings, advocacy for curricular changes, festivals, tours of vegan culinary centers, and many more events.
