The MD Curriculum Committee holds the overall responsibility for design, management, and evaluation of the College’s medical education program. The MD Curriculum Committee oversees four standing subcommittees, and can charge educational task forces and working groups.

Members of the MD Curriculum Committee are a diverse group of faculty, with expertise and extensive involvement in undergraduate medical education. They include deans of M.D. education and student affairs (serving ex-officio), the chairs of the four standing subcommittees, faculty directing courses, clerkships, and residencies at our affiliates, as well as four students. The dean of the medical school serves ex-officio.
The functions of the M.D. Curriculum Committee are to:
- Provide leadership and direction for centralized oversight and management of the four-year undergraduate education program;
- Review the medical school curriculum, teaching and assessment methods;
- Ensure that the content of the curriculum is coordinated and integrated within and across academic periods of study;
- Ensure that appropriate didactic methods are utilized for each course and clerkship;
- Ensure the use of appropriate methods to evaluate both student performance and program effectiveness;
- Review the activities of all sub committees and task forces;
- Approve all institutional policies relating to undergraduate medical education;
- Provide ongoing review of instructional objectives and competencies;
- Approve the academic calendar in curricular changes;
- Approve new course, directors, clerkship directors, site directors and assistant deans at affiliated sites;
- Review all teaching program outcomes; and
- Review all outcome measures and develop plans to address findings.
Standing Subcommittees
Course Directors Subcommittee
Current Chair: M. Rubin, MD
The Course Directors Subcommittee reports to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and consists of all course directors in the first two years, the chair of the clinical directors subcommittee, and four student-elected representatives (two from each of the first two years). The deans of education and student affairs serve ex-officio on this committee.
The function of this subcommittee is to make recommendations to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and to implement M.D. Curriculum Committee decisions regarding:
- All aspects of course content in the first two years;
- Teaching methodologies;
- Evaluation and assessment strategies;
- Scheduling and policies; and
- Faculty development.
Clinical Directors Subcommittee
Current Chair: A. Raff, MD
The Clinical Directors Subcommittee reports to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and is made up of all required clinical clerkships and course directors, the chair of the course directors subcommittee and four student-elected representatives (two from the third and fourth years). The deans of education and student affairs serve ex-officio on this committee.
The function of this subcommittee is to make recommendations to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and to implement M.D. Curriculum Committee decisions regarding:
- All aspects of course content in the third and fourth year;
- Teaching methodologies;
- Evaluation and assessment strategies;
- Scheduling and policies; and
- Faculty development.
Competency Based Medical Education and Student Assessment Subcommittee
Current Chair: F. Milan, MD
The Competency Based Medical Education and Student Assessment Subcommittee reports to the M.D. Curriculum Committee is comprised of faculty members with course and clerkship leadership roles, and has responsibility for student assessment and determination of student competency. The Director of the Office of Academic Support and Counseling, as well as three student-elected representatives (one from the second year and two from the fourth year), also serve as voting members of this committee. The deans of medical education and student affairs serve ex-officio on this committee.
The function of this subcommittee is to make recommendations to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and to implement M.D. Curriculum Committee decisions regarding the institution's assessment programs and its ability to assure the competency of its graduates including, but not limited to:
- Student assessment methodologies;
- Oversight for the quality (reliability, validity) of institutionally developed assessments;
- Implementation of assessments that will meet LCME standards;
- Mechanisms for setting institutional competency standards with consideration of national standards;
- Strategies for standard setting of individual assessments; and
- Faculty development, as needed, to ensure the quality and reliability of assessments.
Program Evaluation and Curriculum Improvement Subcommittee
Current Chair: P. Mishall, MD
Newly established in the Fall of 2018, the Program Evaluation and Curriculum Innovation Subcommittee, which reports to the M.D. Curriculum Committee, is tasked with enhancing Einstein's current evaluation system by
- Integrating actionable continuous quality improvement(CQI) approaches into our educational program; and
- Enabling the institution to make curricular or resource decisions based on competency-based outcomes of our students.
Nominations and Special Projects Subcommittee
Current Chair: P. Levin, MD
Established in 2024, the Nominations and Special Projects Subcommittee reports to the M.D. Curriculum Committee and it makes recommendations to it on newly proposed:
- Clerkship and acting internship site leaders
- Course, clerkship, and acting internship directors
- Subcommittee chairs, co-chairs, and/or vice chairs
- Clinical sites to be used in clerkships and/or acting internships
The subcommittee also takes on special projects related to LCME accreditation, faculty development needs and recommendations, and programmatic innovations as assigned by and reported back to the MD Curriculum Committee.
