The Impact of Sharing Our Identities: How Locating Ourselves can Transform Patient Care and the Learning Environment

Thursday, September 08, 2022

9:00 AM To 11:00 AM Lubin Dining Hall

Event Description

The Office of Faculty Development is delighted to announce a special Medical Education workshop led by Dr. Calvin Chou, focusing on how to transform patient care and the learning environment through the impact of sharing our identities. This faculty development experience is intended to empower participants with a space for introspection, in-depth discussion, and community-building terminology and skills as we unpack our own identities. We will review literature that supports how sharing our identities ("locating ourselves") can enhance an inclusive environment in our interactions with our learners and patients. From these explorations, we will practice modifying our self-introductions by using our pronouns in teaching and clinical care.

Dr. Chou will bring his years of experience and knowledge on communication skills to the Einstein faculty. He previously served as Inaugural Academy Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at UCSF, and is a Senior Faculty Advisor for External Education with the Academy of Communication. He facilitates workshops on communication skills nationally and internationally.

Please join us and allow yourself space for self-exploration, in-depth discussion, and community-building terminology. If you teach at Einstein, you will not want to miss this session!

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

1. Describe literature showing how sharing one’s identities influences inclusion

2. Define “location of self”

3. Apply “location of self” to your learning and clinical environments
