Event Description
Clinical reasoning has been defined as the cognitive and non-cognitive processes by which a healthcare professional consciously and unconsciously interacts with the patient and the environment to collect and interpret patient data, weigh the benefits and risks of actions, and understand patient preferences to determine a working diagnostic and therapeutic management plan whose purpose is to improve a patient's well-being. These skills are essential to medical student and resident physician professional development. While clinical reasoning is a vital skill that is central to quality patient care, it is also challenging to devise educational strategies that specifically focus on promoting reasoning. During this workshop, participants will learn the basic components of and review educational techniques that promote diagnostic reasoning.
By the end of this session, the attendees will be able to:
•Discuss principles for clinical reasoning instruction.
•Apply evidence-based strategies for teaching clinical reasoning to different levels of learners.
•Diagnose a struggling learner and select appropriate strategies for remediation.
