Reimagining Medical Education through Structural Competency - A Framework for Anti-Racism Series Part I: Introduction to Structural Competency and Revising Existing Curricula

Wednesday, March 3, 2021

9:00 AM To 10:30 AM VIA ZOOM

Event Description

Montefiore is at the forefront of combatting psychosocial disparities in health within the diverse communities that compromise the forty-two square miles of the Bronx. Although race is a social construct, the consequences of racism as a system of exploitation and oppression of marginalized populations like those within the Bronx are ever-present in the medical and public health landscapes. Centered within the constellation of efforts to evolve into a more equitable health system is medical education and how we train and prepare our future learners. Participants for this lecture will be introduced to structural competency as a framework for advancing health equity within medical education and applying structural competency principles to existing educational curricula.

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

•Describe the history of racism in the system of medical education in the U.S.

•Explain structural competency and its principles

•Apply a structurally competent/anti-racism rubric to existing curricula

•Develop structurally competent learning goals
