Professional Interests

Ruth G. Freeman, M.D., is a widely recognized authority on menopause, hormone replacement therapy, osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency, and other endocrine disorders. She is co-founder and director of the Menopause Research and Treatment Center and of the Bone Densitometry Unit at the Institute for Women’s Health, Genetics and Human Reproduction at Montefiore, the University hospital and academic medical center for Einstein.

In addition to her extensive clinical experience as an endocrinologist, Dr. Freeman conducts clinical and translational research focused on perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Dr. Freeman is currently an investigator in the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study, which seeks to determine if estrogen hormone therapy prevents or delays heart disease in women. She helped develop methods for women to self-diagnose menopause, and to identify the effects of menopause on bone density and insulin levels. She also assists in studies with body composition and bone-density data as well as in studies focusing on polycystic ovary syndrome.

Previously, she was an investigator in the Women’s Health Initiative study of postmenopausal women, the largest-ever, multisite clinical trial of its kind, funded by the National Institutes of Health.
