Hitting the High Notes
Khyra Cunningham, study coordinator in our division a part of the renowned choir Sing Harlem. The group has performed on America’s Got Talent, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and The Tonight Show, and recently sang the national anthem at MetLife Stadium before the HBCU Classic football game between Morehouse and Howard University. In February, Khyra will be part of the ensemble of Mama, I Want to Sing, the longest running off-Broadway Black musical in theater history.

Dr. Azzi promoted to Associate Professor
Dr Yorg Al-Azzi is a transplant nephrologist in our division since 2018 and the director of nephrology rotation for medical residents. He was one of the co-authors of first report of COVID-19 in kidney transplant recipients published in NEJM. In addition, Dr. Azzi is the lead author of several papers discussing COVID-19 and kidney transplantation published in peer-reviewed journals.

Nephrology Raised $2,250 for the Annual NKF Kidney Walk
On November 14, 2021, Einstein-Montefiore Nephrology work family joined the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk (https://www.kidneywalk.org/NYC), walked 3.1 miles in the beautiful Van Cortlandt Park, and raised $2,250 to improve the future of kidney disease research, treatment and care.

Nephrology Division at ASN Kidney Week 2021
The Montefiore-Einstein Division of Nephrology was well represented at the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Kidney Week 2021. Approximately 20 abstracts were presented (7 were led by trainees). Several faculty members (Drs. Michael Ross, Michal Melamed, Michele Mokrzycki, and Wei Chen) were moderators of large educational sessions. Dr. Ladan Golestaneh delivered a lecture on the community determinants of outcomes among patients receiving chronic dialysis. Lastly, the meeting was highlighted by Dr. Michael Ross receiving the ASN Distinguished Leader Award and Dr. Maureen Brogan) receiving the ASN Distinguished Clinical Service Award. Kidney transplant program published on the COVID-19 vaccination response in kidney transplant recipients
Kidney transplant program (Drs. Yorg Azzi and Enver Akalin etc) in collaboration with Dr. Liise-anne Pirofski, Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, studied SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG (anti-spike IgG) responses to COVID-19 vaccination in 98 kidney transplant recipients. Twenty-one patients had prior COVID-19 infection and 11 (52%) had SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG (anti-nucleocapsid IgG) before vaccination, of whom 20 (95%) generated anti-spike IgG. However, only 32% of 76 patients without a previous history of COVID-19 and a negative anti-nucleocapsid IgG before vaccination generated an anti-spike IgG response. Lack of response to COVID-19 vaccines was associated with African American race, being on high dose anti-metabolite therapy, and having lower pre-vaccination CD3, CD4 T cell and serum IgM levels. Dr. Matthew Abramowitz received NIH R01 award to study physical function in kidney disease
Matthew Abramowitz, M.D., M.S. was awarded a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study mechanisms of physical function decline in patients with kidney disease. The grant will fund a 5-year study to investigate alterations in the skeletal muscle of adults with kidney disease and the changes that occur after patients start dialysis. This study has the potential to influence the care of patients with kidney failure and to shed light on the causes of functional impairment in this population.

The Division of Nephrology was ranked #27 by the USNWR 2019-2020 Best Hospital rankings. The division received the highest possible ratings for 30-day survival rate, nurse staffing ratio, advanced technologies, and patient services.
