Fellows and Residents Present Research at ASH 2014

Montefiore Einstein Department of Medicine fellows and residents were well represented at the 56th Annual American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting & Exposition, which took place December 6-9, 2014 in San Francisco.

Hematology-Oncology fellow Dr. Amer Assal presented "Ovarian Vein Thrombosis: Clinical Features, Risk Factors, and Outcomes".
Dr. Sangeetha Thangaswamy, a fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Seetharama Acharya, presented "Therapeutic Amelioration of Vaso-Occlusion and Blood Flow Impairment in Transgenic Sickle Mice By the Antioxidant Flavonoid Quercetin".
Internal medicine resident Timothy Geoffrey Bowler, PhD, MBBS, presented "Exome Sequencing of Familial MDS Reveals Novel Mutations and High Rates of False Positive Mutations in MLL3 Due to Pseudogene Effects".

2014 Abstract Achievement Awards were presented to several Montefiore Einstein trainees, including Drs. Tushar D. Bhagat and Aditi Shastri, fellows in the laboratory of Dr. Amit Verma, and Dr. Susanna Curtis, a resident in the laboratory of Dr. Henny Billett, Chief of the Division of Hematology.

Dr. Bhagat presented four abstracts, including the award winner entitled "Myelodysplastic Syndrome Marrow Stroma Shows Widespread Aberrant Hypermethylation That Is Abrogated By Treatment with Dnmt Inhibitors".
Dr. Shastri presented two abstracts, including the award winner entitled "Targeting of MDS & AML Stem Cells Via Inhibition of STAT3 by Pyrimethamine".
Dr. Curtis presented two abstracts, including the award winner "Steady State Predictors of Mortality in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease".

"We are proud of these researchers and their accomplishments. Their work has provided outstanding scientific contributions to the field of hematology and hematologic-oncology," said Dr. Billett.

"We are delighted to count these work of these scientists among the innovative investigations being conducted by our Department. Our research activity offers important insights into the nature of medicine," said Dr. Laurie Jacobs, Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine.
