Division of Cardiology

Cardiology Fellowship Research Rotation

Research activities are essential components of training in cardiovascular disease at Montefiore and Einstein. All trainees are expected to participate in and initiate research activities during their fellowship with the support and encouragement of the Division Chief and the Program Director.

The nature of research activity may differ significantly among the trainees in accord with their career goals. Therefore, within the program several separate pathways for research are established.

Fellows have structured, protected time blocks of time for research and academic preparation during the 3 years. These blocks are structured to allow fellows to complete a longitudinal research project (e.g. to maximize recruitment for fellow-initiated clinical trials or to participate intensively in the research projects performed at one of the clinical laboratories or units). Fellows may also use this time to develop sophisticated technical skills to pursue clinical research (see Cardiovascular Research Program below).

Select fellows have the option of linking with the Einstein medical school’s Clinical Research Training Program (below) and the basic research laboratories to achieve this objective.

Focused Mentored Clinical Research
For fellows seeking a career in academic consultative cardiology or those wishing to subspecialize in a specific area of clinical cardiology (e.g., interventional cardiology, echocardiography, electrophysiology).

Clinical Research Training Program
For trainees with an interest in clinical investigation as a career goal: a 2-year program consisting of a didactic curriculum and a mentored research experience leading to a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research Methods.

Clinical Trials Unit (Clinical Pharmacology)
A clinical research and teaching site with a long track record in evaluating new pharmacotherapies for treatment of hypertension, angina, and hyperlipidemias. Several ongoing NIH and/or industry-sponsored trials, nearly 1,000 patients enrolled in trials annually

Myocardial and Vascular Cell and Molecular Biology Research (MVCMB)
A research training program to prepare physician-scientists for careers in investigative research that address fundamental questions of the cardiovascular system.
