Department of Emergency Medicine

Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, founded in 1996, includes academic programs at Montefiore Medical Center, Jacobi Medical Center, Beth Israel Medical Center and the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. Although the primary mission of the department is provision of clinical care to over 500,000 mostly under-served patients per year, the department is also highly committed to education of both medical students and Emergency Medicine residents, and to answering clinically relevant questions through a focus on translational research.

The department has three fully accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs supervised by exclusively ABEM-certified faculty, who are also actively engaged in clinical bedside teaching of medical students in each of their four years at Einstein. Our clinical research program has successfully utilized Einstein’s Clinical Research Training Program (a 2-year master’s program targeted at recent residency graduates and junior faculty) to produce four NIH-funded clinical investigators in Emergency Medicine, and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications over the past several years, focused primarily on the measurement and management of acute pain.
