Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center

Workshops and Tutorials

As part of the MRRC’s Education Outreach program, we offer several seminars, tutorials, and workshops on an annual and semiannual basis.

We are pleased to announce the upcoming MRRC Lunch & Learn MRI Processing Workshop Series! Please see below for more details and the signup link.

2012 MRRC Lunch & Learn MRI Processing Workshop Series (Li & Smith)

The Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center presents a series of workshops introducing the basic techniques for analyzing the structural, functional, and diffusion MR images acquired from human and small animal brains. This series is specifically designed for students, staff and faculty who are interested in pursuing basic and/or clinical research, regardless of prior experience. A pizza lunch will be provided. Syllabi, tutorials, and follow-up reading lists for each workshop will be provided below.

Our apologies, but 2012's Series is now full, and we cannot accomodate any more attendees.  Please stay tuned for the next round!

Note: Each workshop will be immediately followed by an optional hands-on session in the 2nd floor MRRC Conference Room.

Workshop 1

MR Data Structure and Conversion

Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Smith
Time: May 29th, 12:30pm
Location: 2nd Floor MRRC Conference Room (210)

Abstract: This first session will cover several concepts essential for a fundamental understanding of MRI data, including raw Philips and Varian data formats, the DICOM standard, Analyze and NIFTI container formats and laterality issues, dataset dimensionality, dataset viewing and visual assessment, and typical image types obtained for an MRI experiment. An overview of the subsequent workshops in the MRRC MRI Processing series will also be given.

Workshop 2

Human and Small Animal Structural MRI Data Processing

Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Smith
Time: June 12th, 12:30pm
Location: 2nd Floor MRRC Conference Room (210)

Abstract: This session covers the fundamental concepts of anatomical data processing, including the basis of structural MRI signals, motion correction, skull stripping, tissue segmentation, intra- and inter-modality registration, and voxel-based morphometry.

Workshop 3

Human Brain Task-based fMRI Data Processing

Speaker: Dr. Xiaobo Li
Time: June 26th, 12:30pm
Location: 2nd Floor MRRC Conference Room (210)

Abstract: This session introduces the basis of BOLD signal (dHb); gives a quick review of 4D data structures; provides examples of fMRI task designs, including block and event-related designs (videos), introduces details of the task-based fMRI data preprocessing steps—what they are, why we need to do these, and what the results look like after each step (using real data as examples), and GLM for individual activation analysis.

Course Materials: Not yet available.

Workshop 4

Advanced Techniques for Human Brain fMRI Data Analyses

Speaker: Dr. Xiaobo Li
Time: July 10th, 12:30pm
Location: 2nd Floor MRRC Conference Room (210)

Abstract: This session introduces techniques for functional connectivity analyses, techniques for resting-state data processing, and GLM for group level analyses.

Course Materials: Not yet available.

Workshop 5

Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Data Processing

Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Smith
Time: July 24th, 12:30pm
Location: 2nd Floor MRRC Conference Room (210)

Abstract: This session will introduce the theory, rationale, and practice of diffusion tensor data processing using the FSL and DTIStudio software packages. Real-world human and animal data will be used as exemplars.

Course Materials: Not yet available.
