This website has been prepared with the intent to raise your awareness level about electrical hazards and provide you with some basic knowledge and information on how to work safely around electrical systems. This training should not be used as a substitute for more detailed and hands-on training provided to employees who work on or with electrical equipment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has divided workers who work on or with electrical systems into two categories; qualified workers and unqualified workers.
Qualified Workers: are employees who can work on or near exposed energized equipment and must receive detailed training on the following:
- How to identify exposed electrical equipment and energized parts.
- How to lockout and tagout equipment so that it can be worked on safely.
- How to safely work on or troubleshoot electrical equipment and parts.
Unqualified Workers: are workers who are not permitted to work on or near exposed energized equipment. Unqualified workers do not have the knowledge, skills and experience needed to work on energized electrical equipment and parts.
At Einstein, only electricians, multi-trade employees and outside contractors are authorized to perform electrical work. Additionally, refrigeration mechanics, machinists and engineers can disconnect and reconnect equipment as part of the maintenance and emergency aspects of their trades. However, a review of these procedures by the electrical foreman should be done prior to the work. If there is any ambiguity about whether you are considered a qualified or unqualified worker, you should speak to your supervisor for clarification.
Once you have reviewed the training presentation, please contact the Department of EH&S at x4152 to obtain the Electrical Safety Awareness Training quiz. The quiz must be completed and returned to Department of EH&S located at Forchheimer, Room 800 in order to receive credit for completing the training.
